Several Injured as Rough Air Impacts Delta Aircraft Landing at Sydney, Australia

Delta Airlines reported the aircraft encountered "momentary rough air" as it touched down at its destination.

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt following a Delta Airlines aircraft traveling from LA to Sydney, Australia encountered rough air Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson told. Four flight attendants sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services reported they assessed five individuals, and transferred a trio to the hospital with relatively minor issues that such as pain in the back and migraines. The injured were between their 30s up to the 70s.

The event represents the most recent case of aircraft encountering severe turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that global warming is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the representative added, adding that the plane landed "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

Emergency responders reported they were alerted just three minutes ahead of the plane arrived, and response teams were waiting on the tarmac.

Why plane turbulence is growing more common - and often stronger.

During the past year, twenty-five passengers and crew were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, hit "significant" atmospheric disturbance just two hours into the transoceanic journey, and had to make an emergency landing.

In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a harrowing five seconds of severe turbulence. A traveler died and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers lifted out of their seats and fell back down.

In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence during flights, and while cases of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are remained quite uncommon.

Data suggests that there are around five thousand cases of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a sum of over 35 million journeys that are conducted around the world.

Intense turbulence is categorized as when the sudden jolts of a plane going through unstable air exert greater than 1.5g-force on your body - sufficient force to lift you out of your seat if you did not have on a restraint.

As a changing climate shifts atmospheric conditions, specialists caution that commercial aviation could become less smooth: warming trends and shifting wind patterns in the jet stream level are likely to heighten the frequency and intensity of severe turbulence.
