Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
A senior official said the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
